Imprisoned Silk Road founder causes a stir with NFT drop

Ross Ulbricht, founder of the defunct dark web marketplace Silk Road, caused a stir by announcing that he will be auctioning off his series of non-fungible tokens (NFT) from December 2nd.

The incarcerated early bitcoin user announced through his backer was operating Twitter account on December 1st his plans to auction the Ross Ulbricht Genesis Collection from December 2nd to 8th on the Superare NFT marketplace. The collection consists of 11 works of art by Ulbricht handcrafted, then shaped by his followers in NFT form.

The art arose in various phases of Ulbricht’s life from childhood to his time in prison. The early works show cartoon characters and animals, while the later works depict scenes from his trial and inner feelings since his imprisonment.

The proceeds from the auction will help fund a foundation that supports Ulbricht’s efforts to get out of prison. The funds will also help launch the donor-advised charity fund Art4Giving, which is “dedicated to alleviating the suffering of inmates and their families”.

Ulbricht has been a controversial character in the crypto space since he was sentenced to two life sentences in federal prison in October 2015 for running the Silk Road marketplace. Silk Road opened on the dark web in February 2011, allowing users to buy almost anything with Bitcoin (BTC), including illegal substances.

A skeptical commenter, founder of bullbitcoin.com @francispouliot, said that while he supports Ulbricht, “the fact that the insane and immoral NFT Ponzi is now fully normalized is deeply troubling”. Other Bitcoin maximalists also made an exception to the whole concept of NFTs @vladenhawk Writing “I can tolerate the creation of international drug and arms markets. But NFTS is where I draw the line.”

Crypto Cobain, high profile host of UpOnly TV, pointed out in support that although some Bitcoin maximalists are against integrating mining of NFTs, he was instrumental in the early adoption of Bitcoin.
